How to Use Crabs

Learn first, retain with Anki

Crabs is an otolaryngology review resource for medical students and residents. Use an appropriate learning source to understand a topic, then find and unsuspend the corresponding Crabs cards for ongoing review. The cards support retention; they do not replace learning from the source material.

Find the material you have studied

In Anki’s Browse window, use the tag sidebar to find a topic or source, inspect the cards, and unsuspend the cards that correspond to material you have learned. Expand a branch to narrow your selection. A note can generate several cards and carry several tags, so the same material may appear under multiple branches. The explorer below shows the actual exported tag names.

For example, if you have studied the Pasha chapter on head and neck trauma, you can find the cards by expanding Crabs::Pasha and Crabs::Pasha::Chapter10HeadandNeckTrauma. If you have studied the Pasha chapter on laryngology, you can find the cards by expanding Crabs::Pasha and Crabs::Pasha::Chapter2Laryngology.

Use the organizational structure

The historical deck index describes organization by learning stage, source, specialty, procedure, and anatomy. These paths are present in the reviewed package:

Crabs::elective and Crabs::Sub-I: the rotation groupings. Use the current lowercase spelling of elective when locating it in the explorer.
Crabs::Specialty: specialty organization, including HN, FacialPlastics, Peds, Otology, OtologyNeurotology, Rhinology, Laryngology, General, Sleep, and Trauma.
Crabs::secrets_ent, Crabs::Pasha, and Crabs::AAOHNS_PrimaryCareOtolaryngology: resource-based organization.
Crabs::Procedures: procedure-related organization. Read the relevant learning material before reviewing associated cards. Inspect the notes for their references.
Crabs::extra_anatomy: additional anatomy organization; notes may also belong to specialty or procedure branches.
Crabs::Pimped: questions I actually got asks during rotations. These notes are not organized by topic or source; they are a historical record of what was asked and how I answered.

Tags are an organizational aid, not an independently validated curriculum or a promise of complete coverage. Some tags are legacy, abbreviated, or inconsistently spelled. The explorer preserves them so you can see what is actually present.

Searching in Anki

Select tags in Browse to avoid copying outdated examples. For a simple current example, tag:Crabs::Sub-I searches that tag and its subtags. Anki’s search syntax has special characters; copying a path containing *, quotes, or other search operators may require escaping. The website search is a literal substring filter, not an Anki query generator.

See the Anki searching manual for combinations and escaping. The original index’s filtered-deck recipes have not been carried forward as general study instructions; their intended use needs author review.

Updating Crabs

Import into your existing collection

Keep a backup of your Anki collection before updating. Obtain the new package through the existing download form and import it into the collection containing your existing Crabs deck. Do not delete the old deck first as part of this update workflow.

Review Anki’s import options and summary. The packaged-deck importer matches existing notes and can update them depending on modification times and selected options. Your local edits, note types, Anki version, and import settings can affect the result. Package removals do not reliably remove those notes or cards from an existing collection.

For future releases, review the generated release notes. If your collection has substantial personal changes, test the update in a separate profile or a copy of your collection first. See Anki’s packaged-deck update documentation.
